Training: WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Material Identification System

What is WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Identification System)
WHMIS is a Canada wide system designed to give both the employers and workers information on hazardous substances that they have in their workplaces. These may be chemical or biological agents. In Ontario WHMIS is governed by a regulation under the Occupation Health and Safety Act (O. Reg. 860)

Who needs WHMIS training
Any person who is exposed or likely to be exposed to any ‘Controlled Product’ that is listed as a WHMIS controlled product in Ontario is required to be trained in the WHMIS System. In effect this means the vast majority of Ontario workers. Controlled Products include substances such as cleaning agents, fuels, processing chemicals (acids or caustics), solvents paints, and compressed gases.
